What is the difference between an agent, automation, and a chatbot?

Three terms that overlap in marketing but mean different things.
What is the difference between an agent, automation, and a chatbot?

Traditional automation

Rule-based automation follows fixed steps that a person defined in advance. It is predictable and well suited to repetitive, structured tasks such as moving a file or sending a scheduled message. It does not decide anything new; it executes a script.

Chatbots

A chatbot is a conversational interface. Early chatbots used scripted rules; many now use a language model to generate replies. The defining trait is dialog, not autonomy, so a chatbot usually waits for the next message rather than pursuing a multi-step goal on its own.

Agents

An agent sits closer to a combination of the two: it can hold a conversation, but it can also decide on a plan and call tools to carry out steps. The distinction is a spectrum, and a single product can include fixed automation, a chat interface, and agent behavior at the same time.
