How do you design an AI agent from the goal backward?
Start from the task, not the model
Begin by writing the exact task the agent must complete and what a good result looks like. A specific goal makes it clear which tools are needed and which are not, and it gives a yardstick for testing later.
Give it the smallest useful toolset
List only the tools the task truly needs, each with a clear name and defined inputs. A small, precise toolset is easier for the model to use well and easier to reason about than a large, catch-all one.
Decide the stopping rule and the human checkpoints
Define when the agent should stop, and which actions require a person to approve them. Building these in from the start, rather than adding them after a problem, keeps the agent predictable and safe to run.
