What is an AI agent, in plain terms?

A working definition

An AI agent is a software system that takes a goal, decides on steps, and acts toward that goal using tools, rather than only producing a single reply. The core idea is autonomy over a sequence of steps: the system can observe a result, reconsider, and try again until the goal is met or it decides to stop.

Most modern agents are built on top of a large language model that supplies the reasoning, with additional code that lets the model call functions, read data, and keep track of progress across steps.

How it differs from a chatbot

A plain chatbot maps one input to one output. An agent plans across multiple turns, can use external tools such as a search function or a database query, and can adjust its approach based on what it learns along the way.

The practical difference is that an agent can complete a task that requires several actions, while a chatbot answers a question. Many products combine both.

What an agent is not

An agent is not a guarantee of correctness, and it is not a general intelligence. It is a system that pursues a goal within the tools and limits its builder gave it. Treating agent output as a draft to review, rather than a final decision, is the safer default for most work.

Common questions

Is every chatbot an AI agent?
No. A chatbot that answers one message at a time without planning steps or using tools is usually not considered an agent. The agent label generally applies when a system can plan, act with tools, and iterate toward a goal.
Does an AI agent think like a person?
No. An agent produces steps and text by predicting likely continuations and following programmed logic. It can appear goal-directed, but it does not have understanding or intent in the human sense, and its output should be checked.
